Biography
Dr Barbagiannis graduated top of his class from the 2nd General Lyceum of Kavala and was admitted on a scholarship, following the national university entrance examinations, to the School of Medicine at the Democritus University of Thrace. He maintained first-class honors throughout his six-year studies, earning consecutive annual scholarships from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY). Immediately afterwards, he launched his doctoral thesis on the topic: ‘Computerised Cardiotocography in the Early Detection of Suspected Foetal Compromise’. Following his compulsory rural service at the Chrysoupoli Health Centre in Kavala and his training in General Surgery at Kavala General Hospital, he completed his military service and spent seven years specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology in the United Kingdom.
Specifically, he trained at university hospitals in England in management of high-risk pregnancies and operative vaginal deliveries, in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery at all levels, and in infertile couple management. He obtained a diploma from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) in family planning and contraception (DFSRH/DFFP), and in colposcopy (BSCCP).
He specialised in in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) and undertook further training in specialist antenatal screening and foetal medicine. He obtained state certification and a licence to perform ultrasound scans by examination.
Following years of training in the management of breast conditions and their surgical treatment in England and Greece, he was awarded the title of Breast Specialist by the Hellenic School of Mastology upon passing rigorous examinations.
